12 Ways to Utilize Natural Foods This Summer

Eating natural foods is an excellent method to help your family enjoy a diet that is not only balanced, but also rich in essential nutrients. However, eating a diet such as this offers a few hidden benefits you might want to consider during the meal planning process as well.

Cool off

Eating cooling foods such as cucumber, melons, and citrus fruits actually helps keep you feeling cool and refreshed long after the snack. Drinking green tea and coconut water can have the same, long-lasting and refreshing effects – no matter how hot it gets outside.

Fight sunburns

Natural foods, such as grapefruit and tomatoes, contain a lot of lycopene. In addition to being a force for good when it comes to fighting cancer, lycopene is also widely credited with helping to protect the skin from damage from the sun’s UV rays. It never hurts to have one more layer of defense against the sun – especially when it tastes this good!

Improve health

The more colorful the combination of fruits and vegetables you consume on a regular basis, the more health promoting goodness your body is rewarded with.

Boost immunity

Garlic, citrus fruits, and Greek yogurt are excellent resources for boosting immunity. Drinking black tea in large quantities, five cups or more per day, according to research at Harvard University, also boosts immunity due to the L-theanine that is found in black tea.

Stabilize blood sugar

According to Men’s Health cinnamon is an excellent choice for stabilizing blood sugar in addition to other natural foods such as spinach, kale, almonds, cold-water fish, and high-fiber grains.

Manage inflammation

Natural foods such as kelp, turmeric, and green tea all serve to help manage inflammation.

Bolster metabolism

What do cayenne peppers, garlic, coconut oil, and cinnamon have in common? It’s not the recipe for granny’s famous breakfast muffins, that’s for sure. These natural foods are excellent choices for bolstering your metabolism and turning your body into the calorie burning, energy-producing machine it’s supposed to be.

Launch libido

Watermelon, avocados, dark chocolate, and asparagus  all contribute to higher states of heat in their own way. There has been wide speculation about chocolate and women’s libido, but the Journal of Sexual Medicine recently confirmed that women who had a piece of chocolate daily enjoyed a more active sex life. Asparagus, with its high levels of vitamin B is a real libido booster for men and women while avocados are known more for their impact as a natural food libido enhancement for men.

Manage allergies

Local, raw honey is a beautiful tool for helping block many of the more painful symptoms of allergies. In fact, it’s like building up your own natural immunity to allergies without chemical laden injections.

Suppress appetite

No matter how fit and fabulous you may be now, most people today are still watching calories, and trying to eat a better combination of foods. You probably want to avoid overeating and may even be looking for ways to curb cravings for comfort-food favorites you know aren’t good for your body. Eating foods like almonds, apples, cinnamon, sweet potatoes, wasabi, and steel cut oatmeal can help suppress your appetite.

Improve energy

High-energy natural foods might surprise you. A few of the favorites you’ll want to consider include eggs, edamame, pumpkin seeds, and quinoa. These foods offer high amounts of energy building protein and are excellent choices for early meals and midafternoon pick-me-ups.

Relieve anxiety

Whole grains, seaweed, almonds, and blueberries are all excellent food choices for relieving anxiety and balancing mood. While diet alone is rarely adequate to eliminate anxiety on its own, eating the rights foods in combination with other treatment options such as deep breathing exercises and, perhaps herbal supplements, is highly effective.

The shocking news, if you look closely at the list, is that many of these natural foods help the body out in more than one way. It’s exciting to see what a difference a few changes in diet can make for your overall health and wellness.

NEW Problem with Cardio (from Wall Street Journal)

Here’s a shocking expose of the problem with cardio, by Men’s Health workout expert, Craig Ballantyne.

New Research Shows Why You Must Avoid Cardio

By Craig Ballantyne, CTT
http://tinyurl.com/cssc553

10 years ago people called me crazy for warning against the dangers of excessive cardio. It doesn’t work, I said, and you’ll get overuse injuries that can ruin your life.

Well, today, not only am I no longer a lone voice in the wilderness, but major newspapers – like Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal – are reporting on studies that show excessive cardio harms the heart.

According to the WSJ, “Running 20-25 miles or more per week eliminates the benefit of exercise as you grow older and causes excessive wear-and-tear on the heart.”

Of course, exercise ADDICTS will ignore dispute this information, and runners will continue to post “I hate Craig Ballantyne” articles, but the truth about long slow cardio and running is this…

1) You can get better fat burning results in less time

2) Less exercise = less wear-and-tear on the body, including your heart, skeletal muscles, and your joints

3) You’ll have more time to do other important things if you aren’t out running for 200-250 minutes per week (assuming a 10-minute mile)

Even Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the father of ‘aerobics’ has said, “If you are running more than 15 miles a week, you are doing it for some reason other than health.”

So listen, if you want to exercise for fitness, fat loss, and live a long life full of vitality, there’s no better way to train than with short, burst workouts.

That’s why you need the “Burn Fat at Home” System that includes 31 short burst interval workouts and 15-Minute Metabolic Finishers to banish belly fat from the holidays.

7 Outstanding Weight Loss Tips

Posted by Nigel Jeal | Posted in Articles, Fitness | Posted on 16-11-2012-05-2008

If you have been struggling to lose weight for longer than you’d care to admit, then you are not alone. At the same time, you have probably been misinformed, and that’s not your fault. It can be frustrating. You do everything you think you’re supposed to, but you just can’t get rid of those extra pounds. The following tips will help you with your weight loss efforts.

1. Exercise – As much as a lot of people would like to avoid it, exercise is one of the biggest boosts to losing weight. Not only will it burn calories when you’re doing it, it will also increase your metabolism and improve your overall health. Don’t worry, you don’t have to run a marathon to reap the beneficial effects of exercise. Just get moving and you will soon notice a difference.

2. Portion control – Give some thought to how much food you are putting on your plate. It’s all too common to mindlessly pile as much on our plates as the plate will hold. But we only need enough to fill our stomachs, which is usually much less.

3. Mind power – Keeping your mind sharp, refreshed and relaxed will help you cope with things that would otherwise derail whatever weight loss plan you’re on. Things such as meditation and yoga are a good way to do this.

4. Look at labels – When you are shopping for food, look at the nutrition labels. These will help you to select the foods that are lower in saturated fat, calories and refined sugar; and higher in protein, fiber and healthier fats. By doing this, you will have healthier food at home when you get hungry.

5. Grazing – The idea of eating three large meals a day is out of date when it comes to losing weight. The problem is that it gives you too much time between meals to get hungry, and the hungrier you are, the greater the chance that you will consume more calories when you finally eat. If you want to lose weight, then eat several smaller meals throughout the day. You will not only feel fuller longer, but you will also have a steady supply of fuel to get you through the day.

6. Eat, eat, eat – This is similar to the idea of grazing, but it is even more basic. It simply means that you should eat when you’re hungry. Of course you still have to give some thought to what you’re eating, but other than that, go ahead and eat when you’re hungry.

7. Drink water – Be careful here! It was a long-held belief that you had to drink at least eight glasses of water if you wanted to lose weight. However, there is now plenty of evidence that this is not true. But you should still drink plenty of water, just don’t think it will cause you to lose weight. Not only is water good for your health, but it also has no calories, and that’s a good thing for weight loss.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. Thanks for reading.

Diet Shake Recipes For Weight Loss

Posted by Nigel Jeal | Posted in Articles, Diet | Posted on 05-11-2012-05-2008

Being on a weight loss program has its ups and downs. One of those downs is eating the same foods over and over again. Sure, you may see results, but if you get bored with what you’re doing, then the chances are better than average that you will stop dieting and go back to eating whatever you want. Before you give up, though, you may want to try some diet shake recipes. These will add variety to your diet, taste delicious, and will help you as you try to lose weight.

Smoothies and shakes are an ideal diet treat in the summer months because fresh produce is so plentiful. However, with all of the frozen fruit available, you can enjoy tasty shakes and smoothies throughout the entire year. Frozen fruit tastes just about as good as fresh; add in some low fat yogurt, and the shake will have an even better taste and be more enjoyable.

One of the diet shake recipes that I like uses mandarin oranges, mango and ice. Then I add a scoop of protein powder and low fat yogurt. This makes a refreshing beverage that not only tastes good, but it will also fill your belly and help you lose weight at the same time.

From time to time, when I want to mix things up, I will replace the yogurt with banana (sometimes I use both). Adding fruit juices is another way to give fresh flavor to your smoothies and shakes. For example, cranberry juice has positive health benefits for your kidneys. Add some cranberry juice, apple juice, blueberries, strawberries and banana together, then blend it until smooth. This makes an excellent breakfast drink and is a great way to start your day.

If you love the taste of chocolate, but can’t eat it because it’s too high in fat, then there is good news! You can add cocoa powder to your diet shake recipes. One good one is to mix cocoa powder, banana, low fat yogurt, honey and ice together. Now you can satisfy your chocolate craving without having to feel guilty about it. Of course you shouldn’t drink a smoothie like this every day, but it makes for a nice change of pace that will help you stick to whatever diet plan you may be on.

While diet shake recipes and smoothies can be good for you. They are not the full solution to losing weight. If you are serious about shedding those excess pounds, then you need to do so from several different angles. You need to decrease your overall caloric intake. There are several ways to do this, but how you do it is less important than the fact that you’re doing it. You also have to work on burning more calories. Again, doing it is what counts. You don’t have to spend countless hours at the gym doing boring exercises. Just get moving!

Finally, feel free to experiment with diet shake recipes of your own. If you stick with low calorie foods, then the resulting shakes and smoothies should taste great and help you lose weight.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. Thanks for reading.

3 Tips For Choosing A Weight Loss Program

Posted by Nigel Jeal | Posted in Articles, Diet | Posted on 04-11-2012-05-2008

0

Statistics make it very clear that the population, as a whole, is getting heavier and heavier. The problem with this is that it comes with a lot of bad consequences on our health. Perhaps that’s why so many people are trying to lose weight. One of the most common ways for doing this is to find a weight loss program that sounds interesting. If you are looking for a weight loss program, then you are aware of how many different ones are out there. In fact, there are so many that it can get downright confusing, but that should never be an excuse for not losing weight. With that in mind, here are some tips to help you choose the best weight loss program for you.

1. Research. There is no way around it, this is going to take some time. As mentioned, there are a lot of different programs out there, and they often contradict one another. However, one of the main things you are likely interested in is results. After all, it doesn’t matter how good a program is supposed to be if it doesn’t work for you. The first thing you can do is read how each particular program has worked for those who have tried it. Pay extra attention to any claims of the diet not working, and why it didn’t work for that person. It can still work for you, but you will have more realistic expectations once you begin.

Next, look for any endorsements from organizations and professionals. Of course you will give extra importance to people and groups you have already heard of and trust. At the same time, watch out for endorsements from people you have never heard of and don’t know if you can trust them. Either way, it is up to you to do your due diligence to see if the people are qualified to make an assessment of any weight loss program.

Furthermore, part of that research has to include talking to your health care provider. They will be aware of any potential problems you may run into, and they will also be able to add recommendations of their own.

2. Cost. The truth is that we all have different budgets, and that may prevent us from doing certain diet programs. For example, some plans include having ready-made food delivered to your home. While they may work, they also cost a lot of money. If you have the money to spare and you would like to do this type of plan, no problem. However, if you can’t really afford it, but try it anyway, you will start to feel angry if you don’t see immediate results, and that won’t help you to lose weight.

Not to worry, though. The effectiveness of a weight loss program isn’t measured by how much it costs. So, keep looking and you will find a plan that fits into your budget.

3. Think logically. Sellers of diet programs are experts at getting you worked up emotionally, but don’t fall for that trap. That’s why it’s so important to do the previous steps; they will help you to look at various weight loss programs logically. And, that means you are more likely to choose the one that’s the best for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. Thanks for reading.

Is There Any Truth To Green Tea Weight Loss – Test It

Posted by Nigel Jeal | Posted in Articles, Diet | Posted on 28-10-2012-05-2008

0

As a whole, people are more overweight than ever. It wouldn’t really be that big of a deal if obesity wasn’t a risk factor for a whole host of other health problems. Lately there has been some buzz surrounding green tea weight loss. Is there any truth to the potential effectiveness of such a diet?

There is substantial evidence that the Chinese have been harvesting green tea for at least the past 4,000 years. And there’s no telling how long they were using it in some form before that. So, while most people in the West think of it as nothing more than a beverage, people in the East have long revered it for its medicinal qualities as well.

Of course, Western medicine takes a different approach to how it decides what works and what doesn’t for improving people’s health. It’s almost as though they think that if something is natural, then it can’t be medicine. Well, the good news is that viewpoint is starting to change, at least where green tea and weight loss is concerned.

A physiologist by the name of William Rumpler has been studying how green tea effects the oxidation of fat and energy expenditure in the body. In simple terms, he’s seeing how green tea boosts metabolism and increases weight loss. What follows are some of his early findings.

When the study was conducted, the only compound they were able to identify as aiding weight loss was the naturally occurring caffeine. As a control, they had some participants consume water that had the same amount of caffeine. Those who drank the caffeinated water did not show the same amount of weight loss as those who drank the tea.

So, what does this mean? It means that it isn’t the caffeine in green that’s making people lose weight. Other studies have shown that green tea contains an antioxidant called catechin. This is showing some potential. It’s believed that catechin reduces how much fat the body absorbs, and may help people feel full sooner. Regardless of what is causing the weight loss, it does appear that green does, indeed, help in getting rid of excess pounds. As if that weren’t enough, green tea has more health benefits. It reduces the risk of some cancers, lowers bad cholesterol and helps flush toxins out of the body.

More studies on tea are being conducted all the time, but the proof that is already out there is pretty good. Green tea weight loss diets are based on traditional Eastern medicine, and gaining approval from Western science, as well. Drinking a few cups of green tea a day should be all you need to take some weight off. Round out the green tea with better eating and more activity and you will take off more weight and improve your overall health at the same time.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. Thanks for reading.

3 Exercise And Weight Loss Tips For You

Posted by Nigel Jeal | Posted in Articles, Fitness | Posted on 23-10-2012-05-2008

0

Scientists and chemists have long sought a pill that would help people lose weight. And no wonder, such a pill would sell in amazing quantities. But the truth of the matter is that while some medications can have an impact on weight loss, you still need to do the work to lose weight.

There is an ongoing debate about whether food or exercise are the most important element for successful weight loss, but it’s really an argument that does more harm than good. If both sides agree that both food and exercise play some role, then encouraging people to do both is the best way to improve people’s overall health.

Weight loss can only be accomplished in one way: burning more calories than your body needs. Nothing else can make you lose weight. Even medications for weight loss make use of this rule. So, what it comes down to is that you have to either eat fewer calories, burn more off through exercise or a combination of both.

Have you ever known people who can eat exactly what you eat, or more, and seem to never exercise, yet they seem to have some safely-guarded secret about how to lose weight? Maybe they do. But chances are that their bodies simply are more effective at burning off calories; the common term for this is ‘high metabolism’. The good news is that you can boost your metabolism, too.

Exercise does three main things for weight loss:

1. Burns calories. There is an immediate benefit of exercise in the form of burning calories. Some exercises are better than others, such as climbing stairs, running and bicycling. However, any form of extra movement will burn calories, so get active if you want to get rid of those extra pounds.

2. Builds muscle. Just as some exercises are better at burning calories, some are better at building muscles. Any form of muscle resistance will increase your muscles. Why does this matter? Because muscles consume more calories than fat. This means you will get a boost in metabolism even when you are at rest. This may not be automatic weight loss, but it’s about as close as you can get.

3. Improves your health. If you are really overweight, then getting started with exercise may not be easy. But as you start to exercise more, you will start feeling a lot better. And, as hard as it may be to believe right now, you will start looking forward to exercising.

The benefits of exercise are apparent, but as mentioned earlier, you still need to control what you eat. Not only will this help with your weight loss efforts but it will also act as good fuel for your workouts. Eat decent portions, slow down between bites so your brain gets the signal you’re full, and eat foods in as close to their natural state as possible.

We have seen that losing weight doesn’t have to be complicated. We have also seen that weight loss is best accomplished with a combination of both diet and exercise. It is now up to you to follow through on this information…you can do it!

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. Thanks for reading.

Benefits Of Green Tea – Positive Impact On Health

Posted by Nigel Jeal | Posted in Articles, Health | Posted on 15-10-2012-05-2008

0

Green tea has been consumed by people for centuries, most likely dating back to prehistoric times. It was first cultivated in Asia and has more health benefits than black tea. However, both green tea and black tea come from the same plant. The only difference is that black tea is more heavily processed. As with other foods, each extra step of processing robs it of some health-giving benefits. So what are the benefits of green tea?

That’s a great question. First, let’s admit that even though the first people who used green tea didn’t have modern degrees in science, they were more in tune with their environment, and out of necessity, their bodies as well. They may not have understood why green tea worked, but they were able to easily see the results.

Now let’s take a quick step back into the present day. It turns out that modern scientists agree with the people of past centuries when it comes to the benefits of green tea. The only difference is that scientists have a better understanding of why green tea is so good for you. Tea contains flavonoids and polyphenols, catechin to be specific. This works as an antioxidant and has a positive impact on health. Here are some of the advantages of drinking green tea regularly.

1. Preventing heart disease. There is evidence that the compounds in green tea work to lower the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. The thinking is that if the body takes in less cholesterol, then it can’t build up in the blood vessels. If that’s the case, then the risk of heart disease goes down.

2.  Liver function. While modern medicine may not fully agree with the following, those who practice alternative medicine recommend drinking green tea to flush built-up toxins out of the liver. The liver works as the body’s main filter, and your health suffers when it gets backed up. Green tea may be the answer to this common problem.

3. Weight loss. Not only does green tea reduce the absorption of cholesterol, it does the same thing with fat. The more fat that passes through your system, the less there is to store. On top of that, compounds in green tea can lower the secretion of leptin. Leptin makes you feel like you’re still hungry, so keeping that under control will help you feel full sooner than you otherwise would. The other aspect of green tea that aids in weight loss is that it can boost metabolism; burning off more calories even when you are at rest.

4. Cancer. Studies have shown a strong link between drinking green tea and a reduction in certain types of cancer. Just don’t drink it too hot as it could increase your odds of problems in the esophagus.

5. Diabetes. Another one of the benefits of green tea that researchers have found is that it can help regulate blood sugar levels.

Whatever it is that made our ancestors discover the benefits of green tea, it’s a good thing they did. It is a drink that not only tastes good, but it’s also good for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. Thanks for reading.

Your Obese Child – Obesity Can Kill Them Young

Posted by Nigel Jeal | Posted in Articles, Health | Posted on 21-09-2012-05-2008

0

Unfortunately yes, dying young is a major health problem of an obese child.  In fact this is the first generation in a long time, where statistically speaking the chances of children dying before their parents is rising. It is very sad particularly when it is totally avoidable through education, a decent diet and exercise.

Does that mean that the parents are at fault if their child is obese?  No, of course not, life is never that simple. There could be an underlying medical reason why the child is overweight but in general it comes down to a poor understanding of basic home economics.  People lack the knowledge required to ensure that their families are eating healthy food.  This is not just because of a lack of education but in some cases it is a lack of cash as well.  Decent food can be more expensive.  A huge amount of money spent by various food retailers on marketing to convince us that certain foods are good for us.  For example the fast food restaurants introducing bags of salad in a bid to convince us that eating in their establishment was healthy.  With so much miss-information being given out by the media and advertising, why are we surprised that childhood rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and other illnesses are increasing?

So what can we do? We can all start by re-educating ourselves and our families. Work on what happens in your own home first before you try and take on the world.  Teach your children the basics of good food nutrition. You can borrow or buy plenty of books on the subject from your local bookstore or library.  Your medical clinic may employ a dietician who can help you to draw up a healthy menu for your family.

Start by ditching all the processed food you can.  If you can’t give your family a home cooked meal every evening, at least aim to do it on five out of the seven nights.  Insist your kids eat their dinner around a table perhaps while discussing their day with you and their siblings.  Turn off the TV or the computer and enjoy an old fashioned healthy meal.

Every meal you eat should include some vegetables or fruit, ideally the former.  We all know we should be eating five different types of fruit or vegetables a day.  Try and get into the habit of doing this.  It isn’t going to be easy as your kids may not like vegetables but I am sure there are ways and means you can adopt to fool them. You can try giving them grated raw carrot if they hate cooked ones.  Blend up vegetables and hide them in the pasta sauce.  Try combining fruit and vegetables in home-made juices.  Get your kids involved in preparing the dinner as they are more likely to eat the food afterwards.

As well as eating more healthy foods, you need to get your children outdoors doing physical activities.  Try walking to school if possible and going to the park or playground as a matter of routine rather than a one off treat.  Small changes will lead to bigger ones.  Your child’s future is at stake. It is up to you to avoid them suffering the health problem of an obese child.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment and we’ll get back to you. Thanks for reading.
